About Merritt
Writing from hope, humor, love, gratitude, and joy.
Merritt believes practical guidance should always leave room for the person, the family, and the unexpected laugh.
Her writing and speaking bring together a career supporting children with the lived experience of raising a son on the spectrum.
A Career Supporting Children
Merritt has worked with abused and neglected children as a county social worker, advocated for children in the courts, and directed a shelter for runaway and homeless youth. Working with and on behalf of children has always been her passion.
Our ASD Journey
When her son was in preschool, she saw signs that he was not keeping up verbally or developmentally. It was 1998 and not much was known about Asperger’s. The personal journey that followed became the heart of Embrace Unique and more than 30 years of advocacy.
Her philosophy is simple: with hope, humor, and love, meaningful progress is possible. Gratitude and joy keep that work grounded.
Southern California Home
Merritt grew up in Southern California, where she still lives with her husband of 40 years and their two cocker spaniels, George and Gracie. She loves volunteering, traveling, and restorative weekends with sisters and friends.
